Fabulous Fireworks Night Food
Bonfire Baked Potatoes
Wrap potato in tin foil, then, with a long stick, shove the potato into the bottom of the bonfire. Wait 45 minutes. Cheats put it in the microwave first to semi-cook (but you are not a cheat are you??) Retrieve your stick again so you can get it out when its ready! Put on lots of salt, pepper & butter Margarine just wont do).
Bonfire Potato Skins
An alternative to the above: Bake potatoes for an hour; wait to cool down before scooping out most of the insides. Deep fry in hot oil until golden brown & dry on kitchen paper. Add grated chees, salt, petter, sour cream, bacon, whatever the taste buds delight in!.
Games to Play Around the Bonfire
As the history behind the 5th November bonfire involved a chappie call Guy Fawkes trying to blow up Parliament, a good tradition to follow is for the kids to make a "Guy"
Making a Guy
Stuff old pares of tights with newspapers to make arms and legs. Tie together with string and attach to a body made of plastic bags, again stuffed with newspaper. Use a stapler, or sellotape..... Dress your Guy in old garments which you are quire sure nobody wants anymore. An inflated balloon makes an excellent head, and this can be drawn on. Stick on a fabric nose and eyes. Add haird fashioned out of string or wool, and a hat. Once you have made your Guy, you can site him on a chair outside your house and ask passers-by to give you a penny. (All earnings can then be used to buy "bonfire night" treats!! ;-) But all too soon the time will come when you must place him on the unlit bonfire. It seems a strange thing to do after all your hard work, but hey, its a tradition!
TOP TIP: You can make models like these at any time of the year, as part of Scarecrow competitions. They are called different names in different regions such as Hodmedods, Tattie Bogies and Mawhinis. Make sure you choose an appropriately silly name for yours.
Here are a couple of greate games, taken by permission from the "Im bored..Again" activities book by Suzy Barratt and Polly Beard(Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing plc)
Matchbox Nose Game
An excellent game of skill and snot. and a very good way to pass on chickenpox if you have it!
Take a matchbox & remove the drawer with all the matches inside. Place the sleeve of the box on the end of your nose & pass it to your neighbour, who must place his own nose inside the other end of the matchbox sleeve, and try and remove it from yours without dropping it. No hands allowed in this game, only the power of your nimble nasal nudging. Whoever drops it loses a life or is out.
